van der Waals系中の衝撃波について解析を行い、実在気体中を伝播する衝撃波に特有の、相転移を伴う新しい型の安定な衝撃波解 (compressive upper shock) が存在することを発見しました。
この衝撃波は、衝撃波通過前の状態を固定して衝撃波を強くする(通過後の圧力を高くする)にも関わらず、通過後の密度が減少するという、これまでの常識と全く逆の振る舞いを示します。
